FAQs on MAPIN ID Card

1.  What is MAPIN ID?

SEBI has made it compulsory for all individual resident Indian investors, who enter into any securities market transaction of value of one lakh rupees or more to obtain Unique Identification Number (UIN), also referred to as MAPIN (Market Participant Identification Number). The following security market transactions would be covered under the above requirement:

• Primary (IPO) market
• Secondary market including all transactions in Derivatives Segment
• Mutual funds or collective investment schemes

This MAPIN will be generated by SEBI and will be included in their central database of market participants.  

2.  How do I get a MAPIN ID card for myself?

In order to obtain a MAPIN ID you need to contact NSDL (National Securities Depositories Limited) or any other SEBI appointed Point of Service (POS). ICICI BANK LTD is one of the SEBI appointed POS for MAPIN registrations.

The MAPIN ID camps for conducting MAPIN registrations are being organized by ICICI BANK LTD at various cities spread across the country.

3.  Can I trade without a MAPIN ID?

No, you cannot trade without a MAPIN ID if you place any order of value Rs 1 lakh or more in the equity segment and in any mutual fund schemes or collective investment schemes. No trading will be allowed in derivatives segment without a MAPIN ID.

This regulation will be effective from December 31, 2005 i.e. you need to obtain your MAPIN ID card by December 31, 2005 .

However, you can continue trading in equity segment without a MAPIN ID only if you place an order of value less than Rs 1 lakh.

4.  Do I need to go personally to the POS for generating my MAPIN ID card?

Yes, you need to go personally to the specified POS in order to generate your MAPIN ID card. At the POS, you are required to make your signature in front of the registration officer, provide your impressions of the left thumb, left index finger, right thumb and right index finger and photograph electronically on the system of the Designated Service Provider and also furnish correct and true information regarding your proof of identity and proof of address.

5.  What are the documents I need to carry along when I go for my MAPIN ID registration?

You are required to carry the following documents when you come to the POS for generating your MAPIN ID card:

• Any one proof of Identity & Address (original & 1 photocopy) as mentioned in the application form.

• If you mention PAN No, then you need to attach a photocopy of your pan card and bring your original pan card for verification.

• Duly filled up application form for MAPIN registrations as Individuals. (Click here to download)

• Applicants should sign in the columns only while registering (in front of the registration officer).  This portion is scanned and the same signature will only appear on the ID card of the individual.

6.  How do I pay and get my MAPIN ID card if I decide not to go at the MAPIN ID workshop organized by icicidirect and go directly to any of the specified POS?

You need to make the payment by a demand draft for Rs.300 /- favoring “SEBI A/C MAPIN DATABASE” payable at applicable city.

In order to collect your MAPIN ID card, you need to go to that same POS after about 20 days from the date of your registration.

7.  What is the time involved for doing this exercise?

The time involved for doing this exercise is approximately 15 minutes for every applicant provided you furnish a duly filled up application form and signed authorization form.

If you come to our workshop for generating your MAPIN ID, then your MAPIN ID card will be sent to you at your address by courier in about 30 days from the date of your registration at our MAPIN ID Camp.

8.   Can my friend/relative/colleague who is not a customer of icicidirect generate his MAPIN ID in this camp?

Yes, you can bring your friend/relative/colleague for his/her MAPIN ID registration in this camp.
